“Champions aren’t made in the gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them—a desire, a dream, a vision.” –Muhammad Ali

While involved in GHS Volleyball, often times your girls will be with us more than they are with you throughout the season. With that in mind, we as a coaching staff are determined to do the absolute best job that we can helping these ladies become well rounded individuals. We emphasize hard work, dedication, determination, mental toughness, and team work, all values that they will carry on with them once they leave the halls of Gunnison High School.

We work hard setting priorities with the ladies. They must maintain good grades, keep a good head on their shoulders and be good teammates. We will work on how to handle loss, how to celebrate victories, and how to consistently strive to become better both on and off of the court. We hope that the lessons learned by being part of this program will be ones they can relate to their lives outside of the sport.

With that said, making the team is a privilege, and no one should take that for granted. These rules have been established by veteran players with the concept that we are a classy, well respected program who strives for success both on and off of the court.

DRESS CODE
Practice: Please respect yourself and your team by only wearing tshirts/shorts that cover your body. For example, no one will wear clothing that reveals underwear/bras. Always come prepared with your knee pads, braces, shoes, and socks. No dangling jewelry will be permitted.

Home Games: If you look good, you feel good. If you feel good, you have a better chance of performing well. For home games, each player in the program will dress up. Please wear dress pants, skirts, dresses, or capri’s. No tennis shoes on these days. Short shorts or short skirts are not acceptable.

Away Games: When we travel during the week, the ladies will be expected to wear nice blue jeans with their team t-shirts. Please, no jeans with holes in them. When we have weekend double headers, sweat pants are acceptable.

Also, respect yourself and your team by wearing appropriate clothing NO MATTER WHAT DAY IT IS. Cleavage or the revealing of underwear is disrespectful to oneself and unacceptable. No butts, boobs, or bellies.

HAIR COLOR
Only natural color hair is permissible. (No pinks, purples, blues, etc.) Hair feathers are allowed as long as they can be hidden for games. If they can’t be hidden, you can’t play.

CODE OF CONDUCT
Please respect yourself, your teammates, the sport, and the school by acting appropriately. You are a role model within the school. Represent the program and your school by obeying the school code THAT YOU HAVE SIGNED. Because participating in sports is a privilege, expectations are much higher for those involved. Code is enforced very strictly within this program. There is no tolerance for drinking, using drugs, or breaking the law. Also, keep in mind that the code states you are not to be with those who are partaking in such activities.

Another item of the code is behaving in a way that is respectful to your teammates and to the program. Any behavior that is deemed unacceptable or detrimental to the team will be dealt with accordingly.

ONLINE ACTIVITIES
Please be aware that any inappropriate pictures, comments, or statements made on a public website (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) will not be tolerated. We promote a positive atmosphere, program, and school.

CELL PHONES
No phones in the gym during practice. No phones out when in the locker room preparing for a game.

HEALTH
Take care of yourself physically and mentally. We’ve talked about the importance of eating well, so DO IT! Get plenty of rest and eat well. Your body is a temple, so respect it. DO NOT SHARE WATER BOTTLES.

GRADES
Do your homework, study, and ask for help when needed. Chances are, there is someone within the program who can help you with your studies. Don’t wait until the last minute and regret it later. Keep your grades up for yourself and for your team.

TRAVEL
We will travel to the matches together as a team. Players are allowed to ride home with their own parents as long as the parents sign them out after the matches. Players may ride home with other players’ parents as long as we have received a permission slip from the appropriate guardians when the ladies get on the bus.

We support each other in this program; therefore, all players are expected to stay through the completion of the varsity match, whether home or away. The girls learn much from watching each other, and when we travel the added support for each other is a big bonus.

When we travel, don’t be talking to boys. We’re there to play volleyball.

Sleeping on the bus. Be awake on the bus the majority of the time, especially the last hour of the trip.

EFFORT & ATTITUDE
Always come to practice ready to go and work hard. COMPETE EACH DAY. Come with a positive mental attitude to practices and on game days. When you walk into the gym, your focus should be on the game, practice, and doing your best. Leave the daily worries and problems at the door and come ready to play volleyball.

Respect your coaches and teammates.

4 P’s: Prepared, Positive, Punctual, Polite

3 W’s: Work, Will, Win

Lead by example and represent our team and school in a positive way, even outside of the game of volleyball.

PARENTS
Please be supportive of your athlete. The girls ask that you respect the coaches and referees on and off of the court. After matches, please know that emotions are running high for ALL involved. Please follow the chain of command to talk with a coach if there is an issue, which is:
1. PLAYER-COACH
2. PLAYER-COACH-PARENT
3. PLAYER-COACH-PARENT-HEAD COACH
4. PLAYER-COACH-PARENT-HEAD COACH-ATH.DIRECTOR/ADMIN.

Chances are the issue can be easily worked out between just the player and the coach.

If you have any questions or concerns anytime this season, please don’t hesitate to call or email me.
